Why Wood Heat Is Common Up Here

Highlands homes are spread out on acreage, most at a higher elevation than the West Shore below, and the district has stayed rural. Winters up here can run colder and snowier than in the core of Victoria, and a windstorm that brings trees down across the lines can leave a road without power. Plenty of households keep a wood stove as their main heat or a dependable backup for exactly that reason.

If wood is your main heat, don't wait for the first frost. Book a winter's supply in late summer or early fall and keep a reserve stacked under cover, rather than buying a cord at a time as you run out.

Getting a Truck Up Your Road

Access is usually the trickiest part of a Highlands order. Driveways can be long, gravel, steep or all three, and some climb through tight timber with low branches. Before we schedule, we'll want to know:

• How long is the driveway, and is it paved or gravel?
• Is there a steep pitch, a sharp corner or a narrow gate?
• Are there low branches or wires over the drive?
• Where would you like the load, and is that ground firm in winter?

Shade from big conifers keeps a woodpile cool and slow to dry after rain. Choose the sunniest, breeziest spot you have, raise the stack on pallets, and cover only the top. Our wood arrives air-dried to under 20% moisture; the goal is to keep it that way through a damp winter.
