Outside Sidney, North Saanich is mostly a district of larger lots: hobby farms, horse properties, orchards and treed acreage, with plenty of houses set well back from the road. That matters on delivery day. A dump truck needs firm ground, room to turn and clearance overhead, so the questions worth answering before you order are simple. How long is the driveway? Is it paved or gravel? Does it narrow anywhere between trees or gateposts?

Wood for More Than the House

On many North Saanich properties the stove in the house isn't the only thing burning. Workshops, studios, a guest cottage or a barn with a small heater all add up over a winter. If you're heating more than one building, it's usually simpler to bring in a season's worth at once.

Open Fields, Winter Wind

Much of North Saanich is open farmland and shoreline, and those exposed spots catch the winter wind, which drives rain sideways into an uncovered woodpile. Pick a spot sheltered on the weather side, such as the lee of a barn, a hedge or a line of trees, and put a roof or a well-anchored tarp over the top while keeping the sides open.

Because the wood is already air-dried to under 20% moisture, you're storing it, not seasoning it. Good storage simply keeps a ready-to-burn load ready.
