Common Firewood Problems

The Wet-Coast Firewood Problem

In a climate this wet, these four problems show up fast. Here's what Sooke wood-burners are up against.

Unreliable Delivery

Suppliers who ghost, no-show, or push you back a week when the weather turns cold.

Wet or Green Wood

Wood that smokes, won't light, or creates creosote because it hasn't been seasoned long enough.

Short-Changed Volume

Paying for a "cord" and receiving less. Face cords passed off as full cords — never straight.

Overpriced Premium

Kiln-dried and pallet-stacked firewood at eye-watering prices when seasoned dumped wood does the job.

Areas Covered

Sooke Village, East Sooke, Otter Point and Saseenos

Sooke wraps around Sooke Harbour and Sooke Basin, where Highway 14 heads west past the edge of the Capital Region's suburbs toward the open coast. We deliver to the village, to Saseenos on the basin, west to Otter Point, and to East Sooke across the water via East Sooke Road.

Firewood for a Wet Coast

More Rain Means Dry Wood Matters More

Sooke gets noticeably more rain than Victoria. The Olympic Mountains shelter the Saanich Peninsula from much of the winter rain, but that shelter thins out as you head west along the coast, and Sooke's winters are long, grey and wet. That has two consequences for anyone burning wood here.

First, wet wood is a real risk. Wood that was never properly seasoned, or that sat uncovered through a Sooke November, will smoke, hiss and coat the chimney with creosote. Ours is split and air-dried to under 20% moisture before delivery. Second, storage does the rest of the work, so plan it before the truck arrives.

A Sooke Storage Checklist

  • Use a woodshed or rack with a proper roof. On this stretch of coast a tarp alone often isn't enough.
  • Raise the stack on pallets or rails so it sits above standing water.
  • Leave the sides open to the breeze. Wood needs air as much as it needs a roof.
  • Stack within a few days of delivery instead of leaving the pile out in the rain.
  • Keep a week's worth close to the door or under cover by the stove.

Wood Heat Out West

Outside the village, many homes in Otter Point, East Sooke and Saseenos sit on rural or forested lots where a wood stove is part of everyday heating, and winter windstorms can mean power outages. Having a full winter's supply on hand matters out here. The 2.5-cord load is $1200 with one delivery fee, and multi-cord orders through our bulk firewood delivery page are $475 per cord.

Booking Delivery to Sooke

Sooke is at the western end of our extended zone, so deliveries here are scheduled ahead and the delivery fee is higher than on the Peninsula. We quote it when you call or text. Roads in East Sooke and Otter Point can be narrow and steep, with soft shoulders in the wet months, so give us a heads-up about your driveway and where you'd like the load.

Along the way we also offer firewood delivery in Metchosin and Langford firewood delivery, and on the far side of the city, Oak Bay. Read how our seasoned firewood for Greater Victoria is dried and measured.
